Border Patrol agent who shot boy is back on duty
The U.S. Border Patrol agent who shot across the Rio Grande into Mexico in June and killed a 15-year-old Mexican boy has been on regular duty for the past two months, officials said this week.
The agent’s name is not being released. Neither are the details of his current assignment.
Michael Przybyl, assistant chief patrol agent for the El Paso sector of U.S. Border Patrol, said the agent is 31 and has been with the agency seven years. The agent was placed on administrative duty for a couple of days after the June 7 shooting before returning to patrol, Przybyl said.
Killed in the shooting was Sergio Adrían Hernández Güereca. The Border Patrol said the agent fired after coming under attack by people throwing rocks near the Paso del Norte Bridge. Hernández died on the Mexican side of the river from a bullet wound to the head
The agent has not been charged with wrongdoing, but the U.S. Justice Department launched a civil-rights investigation. The FBI is also investigating a case of assault on the agent.
